An exciting non-conference showdown unfolded Thursday as the Mineral Point Pointers hosted the New Glarus Knights, ultimately securing an 11-7 victory.
The Pointers struck first, with Brett Bossert and Hudson Schroeder each driving in a run to give Mineral Point an early edge. However, New Glarus responded quickly, as Nolan Julseth, Ethan Colstad, and Brock Roth each recorded RBIs to take a 3-2 lead.
Mineral Point answered right back in the bottom of the third. Evan Kearns tied the game with a sacrifice fly, and Schroeder added another RBI on a groundout that brought Grady Finley home. The Pointers then capitalized on a Knights’ error to plate one more run and regain momentum.
The back-and-forth battle continued in the fourth inning, where the Knights surged ahead once again. Bossert drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run, Colstad drove in Nehmer, Rear added an RBI single to left field, and Roth contributed another run on a groundout, giving New Glarus a 7- 5 lead heading into the bottom half of the inning.
After a brief stalemate, the Pointers broke the game open in dramatic fashion. Mineral Point erupted for six runs on five hits, highlighted by a three-run double from senior Bossert that flipped the game decisively in their favor.
From there, the Pointers stayed in control. Cole Ripp shut the door in the top of the seventh with a quick three-up, three-down inning to seal the 11-7 win.
