“One of the best parts of my job is helping our school libraries,” said Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski Thursday morning at the Mineral Point Elementary School Library. “Part of my job is making sure your library has money to buy books and games.”
The district received $67,555 in library aid from the Common School Fund, the primary source for school library funding. Districts receive the aid every year.
Before the check presentation, Godlewski read a book to third and fourth graders about a girl, astonished to learn a woman has never been elected U.S. president, who decides to run for president in a mock election at her school.
The book covered how candidates campaign on issues and how electoral votes are cast.
In a mock election related to the book, Mineral Point students voted for the female candidate as the best person for the job (which also happens in the book).
Godlewski said she hopes the students will exercise their right to vote when they turn 18.
When Godlewski asked students what qualities a president should have, they answered that he or she should be nice, understanding, patient and fair.
They also said the president should want to make the country a better place, think about others, not just themselves, and make sure all voices and ideas are heard.
