The Mineral Point City Council last week hired Iverson Construction of Kieler to take off two inches on a segment of Maiden Street and replace it with hot mix asphalt for $30,329.
“Maiden Street from South Chestnut going west approximately 450 feet is in desperate need of attention,” streets foreman Chad Whitford wrote in a staff report. “The past two springs and summers I have tried to patch it. It is beyond patch repair at this point.”
It is hazardous for pedestrians and snowplow drivers, he wrote.
“It sounds like it might not last another year,” said City Administrator Matt Honer.
The council also approved purchase of a standalone generator for the Fountain Street lift station to prevent problems in case of a power outage.
“Fountain Street lift station is our highest flow station by far,” Nate Fosbinder, city water and sewer superintendent wrote in a staff report. “It receives about 40 gallons per minute in normal conditions. In the event of a power outage, we have less than 15 minutes to respond and have a solution. We currently leave one of our portable generators on site to hopefully help us in this type of situation. This station needs to have a standalone generator with an automatic transfer switch. This will allow the station to remain reliable and prevent sanitary backups or overflows.”
Wisconsin Electrical Service of Mineral Point will install the generator. The project is 20 years overdue and it will be a relief to have the generator in place, Fosbinder said.
In other action, the council:
. Heard City Clerk Christy Skelding report that that the Aug. 11 partisan primary had a nearly 40 percent voter turnout.
· Hired Skyler Burkholder as a police officer for special events and oncall duties. He is a full-time deputy with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department.
· Bid farewell to Honer, at his last city council meeting on his last day, with appreciation for all his work over the past three and a half years.
