Friday Night’s football action from Ron Murphy Field found the Mineral Pointers coming off a hardfought 27-6 loss in week 3 against the Darlington Redbirds, and the Lancaster Flying Arrows, hungry for their first win of the season.

The first offensive possession for the Pointers proved to be true as Liam Carey found Elliot Kite, and Kite maneuvered his way, accelerating to the end zone to put the Pointers on the board first. Mineral Point’s attempt at the fake kick for the two-point conversion was unsuccessful, leaving Mineral Point on top 6-0.

The Arrows’ first possession began at a stalemate after an early flag set them up at 2nd-and-15. Junior Quarterback Toay Ragatz moved the chains for the Arrows as he connected with Lukas Weber, getting the Arrows to the midline. Lancaster continued their push down the field, taking it down to the 30-yard line, but the Pointers’ defense put a halt to the Arrow’s offensive drive, forcing the punting unit to come out.

Pointers started the second quarter in a similar fashion, quickly moving downfield. Carey was able to successfully get the 4th down conversion for the Pointers on a quarterback keeper to preserve their second offensive surge. At the 21- yard line, Carey found Kite in stride across the goal line to complete the touchdown, keeping the Carey- Kite connection lethal this season. Mineral Point yet again was unsuccessful with the 2-point conversion, keeping the score 12-0 early into the second quarter.

Lancaster once more started their offensive drive with a flag setting them up for 1st and 20. Ragatz went back to the same play, scanning downfield to spot Weber once more, but this time Kite intercepted the pass, giving the Pointers the ball back. Mineral Point was unable to come up with anything offensively despite the pick-off by Kite to set their drive up around the 40-yard line.

The final 6 minutes of the second half were a stalemate for both offenses, and the Pointers closed out the first 24 minutes leading the Arrows 12-0.

The third quarter remained an offensive drought for both teams, keeping the Pointers’ edge over the Arrows 12-0 heading into the final quarter.

At the 9-minute mark in the fourth quarter, the Arrows got themselves in the red zone. Ragatz capped off the drive with a quarterback keeper up the middle to put the first points of the night for the Arrows.

The Pointers were quick to respond to that drive by the Arrows marching down to the other end of the field, ending up in the red zone. This time, Carey completed the 4- yard run and captured the touchdown for the Pointers. Mineral Point would seal the game with this touchdown from Carey, giving them the 19-6 victory over Lancaster.

The Pointers host New Glarus this Friday night.
