Reigning WIAA Division 3 Team State Wrestling Champion Mineral Point had its try for a repeat cut short Friday night at La Crosse Center with a 42-31 loss in the opening round to Cedar Grove/Belgium.
The Pointers came in with a 17-3 record and was seeded #7 while CGB was a #2 seed at 14-1.
Cedar Grove-Belgium went on to win the team title 38-32 over Aquinas.
Pointer coach Curtis Fielder reflected on the day and the season:
“Our kids went down swinging. Cedar-Grove Belgium is a really good team and we knew that going in. It was a great effort by everyone and we put kids in tough situations.
“Was really proud of our kids not just today, but the entire season they have battled to get this opportunity and I really couldn’t be prouder of the group that we were able to bring to Team State. While they are disappointed, I know we have the type of kids that will have the resolve to work hard to not feel that again. I would not want to go up to this tournament with any other group up there. It was a great season to build on in the future.”
