Pointer softball makes statement in Alabama

The reigning sectional champion Pointers kicked off their season with a challenging slate of games in Gulf Shores, Alabama, testing themselves against top competition from across the nation.

The season opener proved to be an early statement, as the Pointers faced the No. 1-ranked team in the country, Orange Beach (AL). Despite ultimately falling 3-1, the Pointers held their own in a tightly contested match-up. Junior Aida Tuttle provided the lone run with a solo home run, while Tenleigh Bockhop delivered a solid performance in the circle, striking out five over 70 pitches and allowing just two earned runs.

The Pointers threatened late, loading the bases with one out in the final inning, but were unable to capitalize.

In their second contest, the Pointers dropped a 5-1 decision to Dickson County (TN). Jadyn Schultz drove in the team’s only run with an RBI single in the first inning, while Bockhop and Ava Ingwell both contributed hits.

The Pointers rebounded in a big way in their third game, overpowering West Point (AL) in a 12-1 victory. Maddy Kabat led the offensive explosion with a perfect 4-for-4 performance, while Austy Kinch (3-4), Schultz (2-3), and Tuttle (2-3) also fueled the dominant win.

Momentum carried into the next game as the Pointers shut out Valley View (OH) 12-0. Kabat (2-4) and Kinch (2-3) once again paced the offense in another decisive victory.

In a tightly contested matchup against Russellville (AL), the Pointers secured a 5-4 win behind a clutch game-winning hit from Kinch. Ingwell delivered a perfect 3-for-3 performance, while Schultz added two hits in three at-bats.

The tournament concluded with a rematch against Dickson County, where the Pointers fell 6-1. Tuttle recorded a double in the loss. Dickson County went on to reach the tournament finals, underscoring the level of competition the Pointers faced.

Despite the .500 finish, head coach Quinn Schultz praised the team’s effort and growth.

“It was a great tournament,” Schultz said. “Anytime you can win a game in Alabama is saying something. They have great teams in Alabama, Tennessee, and Ohio. Going 3-3 was a huge accomplishment and giving ourselves a chance to win against the number one team in the nation, Orange Beach, shows how good this team can be.”

With valuable experience against elite competition, the Pointers return home battle-tested and poised for a strong season ahead.
