175 YEARS AGO May 15, 1851
The entire length of finished railroad in the United States is said to be ten thousand miles six hundred and eighteen miles. By the end of the ensuing year there will be completed over twelve thousand six hundred miles, which if extended in one line, would reach half round the globe.
150 YEARS AGO May 17, 1876
RAILROAD MEETING. The directors of the Mineral Point and Portage City Railroad Company hereby give notice that a public meeting will be held at the City Hall in Mineral Point on
WEDNESDAY, MAY 24th, 1876, AT 2 O’CLOCK IN THE AF- TERNOON,
For the purpose of considering the feasibility of the project, and consulting in relation to the ways and means of promoting its success.
Circulars have been sent to leading citizens of the several towns interested in the enterprise but all who feel disposed to give "aid and comfort" to the project are invited to attend, whether they receive a circular or not.
It is essential to the success of the proposed railroad, that the amount of stock (500 shares) necessary for the complete organization of the company should be subscribed at once, and the Directors confidently hope it will be readily taken at the meeting.
125 YEARS AGO May 16, 1901
-The city council is asked for an appropriation of $300, to purchase a bell-metal bell to replace the one now on the fire company building, which boys call "the rubber bell." Why not attach a fire-alarm to the bell in the city hall? It is situated near enough to the fire house, and if vigorously rung and supported by the whistle at the waterworks station ought to awaken the soundest sleeper of the fire company.

Do you remember, "old boys," way back fifty years ago when we danced quadrilles, the hop and glide waltzes, the heel and toe polka, etc., what a time we had to keep from tramping on the ladies dresses which spread out on the floor from two to six inches?
"Armes length" was not only necessary, but proper conduct and common sense. But now – you say it.

There’s a light at the end of the tunnel as to the pandemic, so the Mineral Point City Council voted to go ahead with the 4th of July events, including the parade.
Mallory Lindsey’s hot grounder down the right field line scored Hannah Smith in a thrilling 7-6 win softball win.
