Carole Spelic of Mineral Point and Lana Caywood of Platteville each chose knitting a hat as a February art project.
Every picture tells a story.
The story behind the drawings, paintings and other works of art displayed Thursday night at Sardeson Studio was how creativity can bloom in the dead of winter.
Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts organized the inaugural Fun-a- Day February challenge to do something creative every day.
Carole Spelic decided a vacation, while waiting for transportation, was a good time for a knitting project.
She chose a hat, which didn’t turn out as planned. She decided to tear out the stitches and start over.
She realized that at 25, she would have given up. But with maturity, she stuck with it and finished.
Lana Caywood of Platteville also made a hat, but with a different story. Her red, tasseled hat used a Melt the Ice pattern, with proceeds going to immigrant aid groups.
“During World War II in Norway, this type of hat was knitted as a sign you were in the resistance,” Caywood said, and was outlawed by the Nazis. It was revived during the Immigration and Customs Enforcement surge in Minneapolis.
Fifteen people exhibited their work from the project.
Fun-a-Day will return next February.
