Elizabeth Mae Knutson, lovingly known as “Liz,” passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026, at the age of 95.
Born on November 22, 1930, in Mineral Point, Wisconsin, Liz was raised as a proud farm girl. She spent her childhood helping her father with daily chores, developing a strong work ethic and an appreciation for simple living that remained with her throughout her life.
She began her career teaching in a small farmhouse school before moving to La Crosse to attend UWL. It was there that she met the love of her life, James L. Knutson. They married and settled in Onalaska, where they raised their five children and built a beautiful life together, creating a legacy that grew to include 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Liz found joy in life’s everyday moments. She loved cooking and baking for her family and volunteered at Saint Patrick’s to stay close to her children. Many saw her smile and kindness while she worked at Skogans. She remained active through painting ceramics, YMCA exercise classes, attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, and socializing at the community center. In retirement, Liz and Jim especially cherished their time together traveling the world, something they made a priority each year. They also enjoyed spending six to eight weeks each winter in Las Vegas, a tradition they looked forward to for many years.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, James L. Knutson; her parents, Bernice and Ed Gant; her sister, Marie Carns; her son-in-law, James Sackmaster; and her grandson, Matthew Peloski.
She is survived by her five children: Charlene Sackmaster (late James), Steve Knutson (Donna), Renee Knutson Wright (Kevin), Ted Knutson (Denise), and Sharon Peloski (Ken); along with 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Liz will be remembered for her warmth, strength, and unwavering love for her family. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched.
Funeral Service will be held at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1031 Main Street, Onalaska, Wisconsin on Friday, April 17 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m.
