The Dodge-Point coaches are excited again for the large numbers out for the program.
“We need the numbers to fill in all of the 18 events and we lost a very talented senior class last year,” said assistant coach Heather Langreck. “Great leadership skills, talented, hard working and huge point scorers for the team can describe last year’s roster loss of Layne Aurit, Ethan Hook, Cody Yoder, Parker Owens, Gavin Houtakker, Caleb Kitelinger, Annie Robinson, Ellie Robinson, and Olivia Wilson.
On the boy’s side, these six guys were responsible for 56 out of the 100 points scored by the team at Conference last year, and five of them went on to qualify for the State meet.
On the girl’s side, the three girls scored 50 of the 88 points earned at Conference and both Annie and Ellie were four year State qualifiers.
In the distance events, the team will be looking to senior Gabe Engel and Junior Johnny Robinson to lead the way. Both had successful cross country seasons with Johnny Robinson qualifying for the State meet. Sophomores, Nolan Allendorf and Leif Nelson had a strong freshman track season and were both varsity runners for cross country.
On the girl’s side, sophomore Raina Arndt and freshman Avalee Langreck will be leading the distance roles coming off of a strong performances on varsity in cross country.
On the Sprint side, returning state qualifier, senior Zayne Cartwright has already proven that he will be a threat in many events this season. Cartwright has recently broken four indoor school records in the 55m hurdles, 60m hurdles, triple jump and long jump.
“We just have to keep him healthy for the season as he competes in some of the most taxing events on the legs,” said coach Langreck.
Seniors Damon Marr and Brock Fockler will be relied on for our relays and individual sprint events.
“Again, the key is to keep them injury free for the season.”
Sophomore, Harper Olson, proved last year that he is one of our top three sprinters and our best high jumper.
“We can put him in anything and he performs well,” said Langreck. For the girls, senior Kit Finley and state cross country qualifier, Payton Christopher will be looked to in filling in the relays and individual events.
“Both of these athletes are so versatile. Payton can compete well in any running event on the track and Kit can score in the jumps, hurdles and all the sprint events,” Langreck said.
Junior Emily Heisner was second in the shot put last year at Conference and she recently broke her own school indoor record.
“We know we can lean on her for points in the throws and her leadership skills in those events,” Langreck said
“We have a lot of new talent this year and are excited to see performances and growth from both our new and returning athletes.”
