An outdoor gathering space at the Mineral Point American Legion and VFW Post is nearing completion.

Businesses and individuals donated toward the outdoor patio project, said Legion Commander Jim Wehrle.

A red, white and blue mural will include all branches of service. Benches in memory of Legion members and tables make an outdoor seating area.

A welded steel railing anchored to concrete ensures safety above a 5- foot wall.

“This was really quite a creation. I design all my stuff. I built all that stuff in my shop” but needed help with installation, said John Christianson, who created and installed the railing.

Christianson, who moved to Waldwick in 2008 after owning Economy Welding in Madison, is still working at 82. He was honored to be selected for the job after Legion member Jack Lawinger outlined the scope of the work, he said.

The patio work follows a major renovation of the indoor Legion meeting hall and bar.
