Pickleball, tennis court grant approved

Construction is expected next summer on the courts and parking lot at Soldiers Memorial Park, city council members learned at the Tuesday, Sept. 8 meeting.

The city was awarded a $357,000 Department of Natural Resources land and water conservation fund grant for new pickleball courts and renovation of the tennis courts and parking lot.

State grant funds must be matched locally. Friends of the Soldiers Park Courts, an affiliate of the Iowa County Tennis Association, pledged $100,000 toward the project.

Officials expect other monetary and in-kind donations.

The parking lot is 50 years old and the courts need repair or replacement.

In other action, the council agreed that 18 concrete planters will be installed on High Street and Commerce Street, from the Post Office to the Railroad Museum, in celebration of the city’s bicentennial next year.

Plans call for placement primarily near intersections by bump outs, so the planters will not interfere with foot or vehicle traffic.

Planters will be used seasonally, able to be moved by the city skid steer, and stored over the winter.

A grant application has been made to the Mineral Point Community Foundation for all or part of the estimated $15,000 cost of the planters.
