An 83-year-old Mineral Point man died Saturday morning after a utility terrain vehicle (UTV) overturned while he was spraying weeds on a private property in the Town of Linden.
According to the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office, emergency responders were dispatched at approximately 7:50 a.m. on June 28 to a residence on Shepherd Road following reports of a UTV rollover.
The preliminary investigation determined that Gary Hamilton, 83, of Mineral Point, was operating the UTV on a hillside while spraying weeds when the vehicle struck a tree stump. The impact caused the UTV to overturn, pinning Hamilton beneath it.
Deputies, along with personnel from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Mineral Point Fire Department, and Mineral Point EMS, worked to free Hamilton from beneath the vehicle. Life-saving measures were immediately initiated, and UW Med Flight was requested due to the severity of his injuries.
Despite the efforts of first responders and medical personnel, Hamilton died from his injuries at the scene. Iowa County Coroner Wendell Hamlin pronounced him deceased.
Investigators also determined that Hamilton was not wearing an occupant restraint or other personal protective safety equipment while operating the UTV.
The Iowa County Sheriff’s Office extended its condolences to Hamilton’s family and friends.
The response included assistance from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Mineral Point Fire Department, Mineral Point EMS, UW Med Flight, Iowa County Coroner Wendell Hamlin, Gorgen Funeral Home, and Larry’s Service and Towing.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is leading the ongoing investigation into the crash.
