The Mineral Point High School Spring Concert celebrated the dedication and achievements of several senior musicians with prestigious year-end honors recognizing excellence, leadership, and commitment to music.
The evening also featured a heartfelt surprise honoring longtime music educator Jean Van Matre. There was hardly a dry eye in the house as Van Matre was recognized for her decades of dedication to music education in Mineral Point Schools.
Van Matre served for many years as choir director before retiring from the position, and she has continued accompanying school ensembles at concerts and festivals. In a meaningful full-circle moment, she was also the very first recipient of the Music Boosters Award in 1966 while a student at Mineral Point High School. Since then, she has faithfully returned each spring to present the award to a deserving senior musician.
In recognition of her lasting impact on generations of students and musicians, school officials announced that the Music Boosters Award will now officially be renamed the Jean Van Matre Commitment to Music Award.
Thank you, Jean, for the countless musical memories and enduring legacy you have given to the Mineral Point community.
