DP United stuns RV by holding them scoreless

The Dodge Point Varsity girls soccer team traveled to Spring Green on Tuesday to face off against #8 ranked River Valley. The United defense successfully locked down River Valley’s offense to keep them scoreless.

While a final score of 0-0 didn’t add a “W” to the column, the result spoke volumes about Dodge Point’s tenacity and rapid team development. United did what no other team could do this season: silence the River Valley attack and end their season-long scoring streak.

Goalkeeper Lucy Paynter racked up 13 saves to keep the clean sheet intact. Head Coach Andy Weber described many of those saves as a “total team effort.” The defensive line-composed of Lilly Houtakker, Ella Wilson, Abilene Bartz, and Sara Moyle-forced River Valley into desperation shots from distance which were comfortably neutralized by Paynter.

While the defense held the line, Layla Novak dictated the tempo. Novak controlled midfield for the majority of the game, neutralizing River Valley’s transitions and allowing Dodge Point to find their own rhythm. The United offense generated 6 shots on goal, with their best opportunities coming at the end of the first half.

While United gave up only two penalties, they drew a number of fouls from a frustrated River Valley squad. “Our mindset going in was to keep track of our marks, give everything we’ve got, and send a message that we’re here to compete and can compete with anyone,” said Coach Weber. “The team did just that. This is the first time all season Valley has not scored a goal. It was a great way to cap off our three-game road trip.”

Dodge Point returns home Thursday, April 30, to host Lake Mills, currently ranked 10th in Division 4.
