SWAL coaches have named the Mineral Point baseball team as having the best shot to challenge Fennimore for the conference’s top spot.
Fennimore won the SWAL last year and finished as the WIAA D3 runner up.
The road for coach Brett Lawinger got tougher when first team all conference pick Clayton Yanna was forced to miss his junior season due to injuries. Also fellow first team choice senior Grady Finley has his available limited due to injury.
But the Pointers have proven themselves to be winners on the diamond and have earned Lawinger a 48-30 record going into his fourth season. He has been with the Pointer program for 11 years.
Assisting the Pointers are Curtis Fiedler and Dakota James who are in their fourth and fifth seasons.
Finley and Yanna were to help in the pitching department but those duties now fall mainly to Adam Cody, Cole Ripp, Brett Bossert and Brylen Lee. Lawinger will be testing other arms as the season unfolds.
Cody was 3-4 last season with a respectable 3.90 ERA. Ripp was 1- 1 and held opponents to 1.90 earned runs.
Other starters back are Hudson Schroeder, a senior outfielder who hit .321 last year, Evan Kearns, a senior DH, who carried a .318 average in 2025 and earned honorable mention all-conference, senior outfielder/pitcher Bossert who hit .305, and junior infielder Elliot Kite who hit .309.
Lee was also a force with the bat as he hit .356 and Cody, a senior p/ss, hit .351.
Needless to say, the Pointers are some tough outs.
Lawinger will put a senior laden line-up on the field and says they need to be strong leaders. He sees leadership and mental toughness as two areas the Pointers need to excel.
Lawinger’s main challenge is finding enough arms to get through the season. He hopes to develop a staff of seven or eight players who can handle the innings.
Lawinger sees Lee’s experience behind the plate as a plus.
Fennimore and Cuba City are Lawinger’s choices as SWAL favorites.
He sees the Pointers as going as far as their consistency on the mound and at the plate will take them.
