Success has pushed the Mineral Point golf team to WIAA Division 2 which means they will be seeing new opponents in the post season.

For the Pointer coaching staff it will be business as usual.

Head coach Cory Sokol starts his 17th season and assistant coach Scott Schmitz is in year number 11.

The duo has successfully guided the Pointers to 10 straight conference championships in the SWAL. Sokol sees the Pointers as having a good chance at an 11th straight title with Cuba City/Benton/Southwestern and Argyle/Pecatonica as challengers.

First up will be filling gaps caused by graduation.

"We had a couple major losses last season when Eli Lindsey and Reid Acherman graduated" Sokol pointed out. "Eli was a first team All Conference player all four years, played in three State Tournaments, and was a huge contributor to our first Team State title in Mineral Point history. Reid was the 2025 Conference MVP and also played in three State Tournaments contributing to our first Team State title as well. The leadership that these two gentlemen brought to the team is irreplaceable, and we are truly proud of the young men they have become. They were some of the best leaders I’ve had the pleasure to coach, and there is no way that Mineral Point High School would be able to say they have a

State Championship in golf without them."

Some of the graduates are continuing their golf experience on college teams. Alex Ross is currently playing at the University of Stevens Point in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Eli Lindsey is currently playing at the University of Viterbo in La Crosse, Wisconsin

The Pointers have some top experience back for 2026.

Returning Letterwinners include: -Drew Aschliman (Sr.) Multiple 1st Team All Conferences, Played in 2 State Tournaments, Part of the State Runner-Up and State Championship teams, also finished T-5 in the 2024 State Tournament individually.

"Drew is just one of those kids that gets IT, and by it he is just full of talent," Sokol said. "Yes, some of that talent is natural, but this kid is constantly practicing all the time, hitting the gym all the time, so he creates most of his accomplishments through the hard work and dedication he puts in on a daily basis."

-Gaige Godfery (Sr.)

"He was part of the 2025 Conference Championship, and Regional Championship teams and has some of the best work ethic on the team. I can tell that something big is going to happen for him this season. If he can overcome the occasional bad shot, the sky’s the limit for Gaige this season."

Rounding out the line-up and looking for course time are:

-Brady Haas (Sr.) Gage Federman (Sr.) Liam Carey (So.) Carver Potterton (So.) Suttyn Weinbrenner (So.) and Cowan Bishell (So.)

"They will be pushing for spots on varsity as well," said Sokol. "The amount of time the sophomore class put in last summer has us very excited about what the future might hold for years to come."

Sokol says the season may have a different look as the squad shoots for the SWAL crown.

"Pushing for our 11th straight conference title, and maybe getting away from Dodge Point Country Club with not hosting Regionals or Sectionals for the first time in nine years might take away some of the pressure when it comes tournament time," he said.

Leadership and off season work are areas that Sokol hopes pays of for strengths.

"We definitely have strong leadership in Drew and Gaige," said Sokol. "It’s just a matter of time to see if all the summer reps will pay off when it comes to competition. Practice rounds compared to tournament rounds are two totally different animals."

Team improvement will depend on how well the Pointers handle distractions.

"Once again our biggest hurdle is all the activities that are going on

during the spring months at school," Sokol feels. "Always seems to be so many school events pushed into the last part of the year, so keeping priorities in check is very difficult. Golf is definitely a sport that can’t be mastered, and it will be very important for all the kids to understand that the extra work will be needed in order to be playing at the State Tournament."
