100 YEARS AGO April 22, 1926 COKER MINES CLOSE DOWN PERMANENTLY.
From Livingston Leader.
Cokerville Mines were closed Tuesday at noon by orders from Galena headquarters and workmen started at once tearing down the buildings and machinery.
The Tuesday noon whistle knelled the passing of mining activities in the immediate vicinity of Livingston, which will remain but a memory of the one-time prosperous boom days.
The news, as it spread, cast a spell over the town as only an incident of its kind would. Eighty-three men were thrown out of local employment, but have been offered work at other holdings in the vicinity of Shullsburg and Benton.
The houses and lumber will be sold and the machinery moved elsewhere.
The complete shut-down came as a result of the decreasing output of ore.
