Trust, community, humility learned in Mineral Point, speaker says

“You’re already proving that where you come from doesn’t limit where you can go,” Clare (Mitchell) Galvao told the newest members of the Mineral Point High School chapter of the National Honor Society last week.

Galvao, a 2006 Mineral Point graduate, is vice president of sales growth and capabilities for Kellanova, an international snack and cereal company formerly part of Kellogg.

“Coming from Mineral Point, your upbringing and small-town roots have given you strengths the world deeply needs. Be proud of where you came from and carry those qualities with you. Refine them, pair them with ambition and let them grow with you,” she said. Familiarity surrounded you, she said, and everybody knew who you were.

“It wasn’t just one class, one teacher or one opportunity. It was the environment,” she said.

Growing up in Mineral Point instilled in her “three things that I carry every single day, no matter where I go in the world,” said Galvao, who worked abroad and now lives just outside Chicago.

The first is the ability to build trust quickly and meaningfully, she said.

“I generally assume positive intent when I meet someone,” she said. “I lead with rapport and not a risk assessment. Basically, I approach people like nobody is a stranger.”

She acknowledged that “being too trusting can tip into being naïve if you’re not careful,” but said trust is powerful when paired with awareness.

The second is the deep sense of community she felt while growing up. “That sense of belonging stays with you,” she said. “That mindset that we’re all connected somehow has helped me work across cultures, continents, industries and perspectives.”

And third, she learned a grounded, humble approach to work. Let your work speak for itself, but find an authentic sweet spot of taking justifiable pride and credit.

“Pair your small-town humility and strong work ethic with big-city visibility and self-advocacy,” she said.

The National Honor Society recognizes excellence in scholarship, service, character and leadership.
