When it comes down to it, relationships are between two people.

So in Almost, Maine, to be presented by the Mineral Point High School Drama Department, two actors at a timecommand the stage.

“This is a team kind of play,” said senior Miley Coniber. “You have to trust each other to have your parts down.”

The contemporary play is set in an unincorporated northern Maine town on a winter night. A series of interconnected vignettes follows different couples on a single night experiencing longing, joy, heartbreak, friendship, isolation, melancholy and hope. “It’s different than most plays,” said junior Cooper McGuire.

It has minimal sets and street clothes instead of costumes.

“It’s got a lot of heart to it, and the kids are really enjoying it,” said director Jason Smith.

It’s more of an ensemble cast than one starring role.

Senior Madelyn Steffes said her character is “kind of a tomboy who believes nobody could be interested in her romantically.”

Some of the characters navigate misunderstandings and second chances.

The play runs April 24 and 25 at 7 p.m., and April 26 at 2 p.m. at the Mineral Point Opera House. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.
